‘That’s A Zombie Lie!’ Bill Maher Stunned When Charlemagne Says Black People Still Have To Be 5 Times Better

Comic and political pundit Bill Maher pushed back when radio star Charlamagne Tha God said Black people still have to be “5 times better” than everyone else in order to succeed — which Maher called “a zombie lie!”

On Friday night’s edition of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, the comic’s panel guests were Ana Navarro and Joel Stein and the interview guest was Charlamagne Tha God.

While discussing President Joe Biden’s commencement address to Morehouse College, Maher challenged Biden’s question to the class: “What is democracy if you have to be 10 times better than anyone else to get a fair shot?”

Charlamagne said now it’s more like five times, which stunned and displeased Maher:

BILL MAHER: One of the more controversial things he said was, he said to the graduating class that you have to be ten times as good to get a fair shot in America. And can I read what Glen Loury and John McWhorter– you listen to their podcast? I think they’re great– said about this.

Loury said, “I thought it was the kind of speech you would have given in 1974, maybe 1984, and not 1924.”.

McWhorter, “for goodness sake, can we please admit the time passes? I remember my mother saying that in the 70s when it still made sense. It’s simply not true anymore, and we should celebrate that.”.

You agree with that?

CHARLAMAGNE THA GOD: I don’t know if it’s ten times better, but maybe five.

BILL MAHER: Yeah– come on!

CHARLAMAGNE THA GOD: Yeah–.

BILL MAHER: You think you have to be five times?

CHARLAMAGNE THA GOD: Yeah. When you when you Black in America. Absolutely.

BILL MAHER: In 2024?

CHARLAMAGNE THA GOD: When you’re Black in America, when you’re a woman in America. If you’re a Black woman in America? Absolutely!

BILL MAHER: I think that’s I think that’s a zombie lie!

CHARLAMAGNE THA GOD: Why?

BILL MAHER: Because I just don’t think that’s America anymore.
