CNN Chief International Anchor Christiane Amanpour fired back at former Fox News host Tucker Carlson for his bizarre claim that Western journalists have not tried to interview Russian President Vladimir Putin.

On Tuesday, Carlson proudly confirmed in a video posted to Twitter/X that he was going to be interviewing Putin. Why? Because while “our politicians and media outlets” have been giving Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy their time, “not a single Western journalist has bothered to interview the president of the other country involved” in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, he explained.

Carlson went on:

Most Americans have no idea why Putin invaded Ukraine, or what his goals are now. They’ve never heard his voice. That’s wrong. Americans have a right to know all they can about a war they’re implicated in, and we have the right to tell them about it because we are Americans, too. Freedom of speech is our birthright.

We are not here because we love Vladimir Putin. We are here because we love the United States. And we want it to remain prosperous and free.

Amanpour begged to differ. In her own tweet, Amanpour called Carlson’s claim “absurd,” clarifying that plenty of journalists have tried to interview Putin since he invaded Ukraine:

It should also be noted that Russia is keeping two American journalists — Evan Gershkovich and Alsu Kurmashevaimprisoned on dubious charges and without trials for reporting from inside Russia.
