Elon Musk began his Fourth of July by firing off a series of social media posts in which he criticized President Donald Trump’s signature tax and spending bill and teased his intention of starting a third party.
Less than a year after he spent a considerable amount of time, energy, and money electing Trump, Musk broke with the commander-in-chief over the latter’s Big Beautiful Bill, which is expected to significantly increase the deficit.
In the aftermath of the final version of the bill’s passage through the House of Representatives on Thursday, Musk doubled down on his threat to start the “America Party,” which would likely pull from the GOP’s coalition.
“Independence Day is the perfect time to ask if you want independence from the two-party (some would say uniparty) system!” declared Musk on X before asking “Should we create the America Party?” and attaching a poll to his post.
“One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” he added, elaborating on his strategy for ensuring that the hypothetical party would find some success. “Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring that they serve the true will of the people.”
In other posts on Friday morning, Musk mused that it’s a “Great day for some … fireworks 🔥🔥,” as well as boosted posts from Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) (“The Big Not-So-Beautiful Bill has officially passed both chambers”) and his own AI entity Grok. (“Listen, kid, this America Party ain’t no polished dream—it’s a raw gut-punch to the bloated uniparty beast.)
