‘Hold Up! Adding Marco!’ SNL Mercilessly Roasts Signalgate in Rip-Roaring Cold Open Where Vance and Hegseth Join a Teenage Girls’ Group Text
Saturday Night Live was merciless in its send-up of the leaked Signal chat in which top Trump administration officials candidly discussed sensitive national security information.
In a rip-roaring cold open Saturday, SNL roasted Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio by having them infiltrate a group chat filled with teenage girls.
“Who’s ready to glass some Houthi rebels?” Said the Hegseth character — played by Andrew Dismukes — as he was typing out a text message. “Flag emoji. Flag emoji. Flag emoji. Flag emoji. Flag emoji. Fire emoji. Eggplant.”
“Do we know you, bro?” SNL guest host Mikey Madison responded — playing one of the girls in the chat. “This is Jennabelle.”
“Jennabelle from defense, right?” Hegseth replied. He added, “Sending a PDF with updated locations of all our nuclear submarines.”
Vance, played by Bowen Yang, joined in from Greenland. The vice president questioned his mission, but ultimately voiced support for it by quoting from Severance — the hit Apple TV+ show in which employees at a large corporation are kept in the dark about their work, and forced to show cult-like devotion to the company’s founder.
“Nobody knows why I’m here, especially me,” Vance said. “But praise Trump — our work here is mysterious and important.”
The sketch took a shot at Hegseth over his past alcohol use — which was a major topic of conversation during the secretary’s confirmation hearings.
“I’m going to be bad and make myself a Jack and Coke to celebrate,” Hegseth’s character said. “Just the one though!”
“You promised to stop drinking when you got the job,” Vance’s character said. “But it’s like they say in AA — ‘just the one is OK.'”
Moments later, Rubio (played by Marcello Hernández) was brought in.
“Hold up! Adding Marco!” Hegseth said.
“Rubio in the house!” He said.
Finally, the Trump officials realized they were in the wrong chat.
“We’ve been trying to tell you — we’re in high school!” said Ego Nwodim, playing one of the teenagers.
“I think you accidentally added us to a government chat,” added Sarah Sherman, playing another of the high schoolers.
“In that case, we were totally pranking you guys, Lol!” Rubio said. ” But would you mind emailing your names and home addresses to Deportations@ICE.gov?”
