‘Jeff Bezos Was Very Nice’: Trump Declares Victory in Battle With Amazon Over Tariff Price Hikes
President Donald Trump declared victory in his administration’s battle with Amazon over whether the e-commerce giant might begin indicating when price hikes on its products were affected by Trump’s tariffs on countries around the world on Tuesday.
Punchbowl News reported on Tuesday morning that Amazon intended to start displaying how much of an item’s cost is directly attributed to tariffs, prompting White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt it declare it “a hostile and political act by Amazon” as well as ask why Amazon did take similar measures “when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?”
Subsequently, Amazon told The Washington Post‘s Jeff Stein that “The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store has considered listing import charges on certain products. This was never a consideration for the main Amazon site, and nothing has been implemented on any Amazon properties.”
CNN then reported that a “pissed” Trump called Amazon founder Jeff Bezos after the Punchbowl report broke.
Trump spoke about the call briefly after a reporter asked him a mostly inaudible question about it on the White House lawn Tuesday afternoon.
“Great, Jeff Bezos was very nice. He was terrific. He solved the problem very quickly, and he did the right thing, and he’s a good guy,” answered Trump.
