MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow Straight-Up Asks Kamala Harris If She’s ‘Running Again in 2028?’

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow straight-up asked former Vice President Kamala Harris if she will “consider running again in 2028?”

Harris stunned the political media world with surprisingly candid excerpts from the forthcoming campaign tome 107 Days, and has embarked on a media tour in support of the book. The title is a reference to the time elapsed between her ascension to the top of the ticket and her Election Day loss to now-President Donald Trump.

The ex-veep was a guest on Monday night’s edition of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show for a wide-ranging interview that hit a lot of topics covered in the book, and some that aren’t.

In wrapping up the lengthy chat, Maddow tried to drill down on Harris’s careful response about her future, but got a response that the host described as “politic”:

MADDOW: Will you consider running in 2028?

HARRIS: That’s not my focus right now.

MADDOW: I know.

(CROSSTALK)

HARRIS: That’s not my focus at all.

MADDOW: I know…

HARRIS: It really isn’t.

MADDOW: I’m — you know I’m just going to…

HARRIS: Yes. Yes.

MADDOW: Well, will — let me — I know you’re not considering it now. But are you are you saying, when you decided that you’re not going to run for governor of California…

HARRIS: Correct.

MADDOW: … were you saying you are never going to run for anything ever again, or were you just saying, I’m not going to run for that office right now?

HARRIS: That was the decision before me. And I made the decision not to run for governor of California. By the way, there are a lot of great candidates running.

(LAUGHTER)

HARRIS: And I love my state, and we want somebody to definitely follow in the footsteps of Gavin in terms of standing up and understanding the power that California has to stand up to what we’re seeing in D.C.

MADDOW: As politic as you are being in those remarks, you are beautifully impolitic in this book in a way that makes it honest and, as I said, candid, fun to read, and I think really important.

I think it is blunt and true. And I commend you for writing it and for being willing to go out there and defend it and talk about it in these blunt terms at a time we need some real straight talk.

HARRIS: Thank you.

MADDOW: Thank you for being here today.

HARRIS: Thank you. I appreciate that.

MADDOW: Thank you.
