Trump Publicly Calls for Special Counsel on Election After Bill Barr Leaves DOJ

Hours after Bill Barr officially stepped down as Attorney General, President Donald Trump publicly called for a special counsel to look into the election results.

Trump is refusing to accept the reality that he lost, and as a result he’s been entertaining all sorts of baseless and conspiratorial claims of voter fraud — claims that, despite the Trump team’s repeated insistences on TV, they have been completely unable to prove in court after court. Even Trump-appointed judges have rejected their claims.

“After seeing the massive Voter Fraud in the 2020 Presidential Election, I disagree with anyone that thinks a strong, fast, and fair Special Counsel is not needed, IMMEDIATELY,” the president declared.

There were reports recently about Trump discussing making Sidney Powell — who has been on a conspiracy-laden legal quest of her own — special counsel on the election.

The president himself could not make the special counsel appointment. His public demand comes after Barr — in his final press conference as attorney general — said there was no need for one. The decision would now fall to Acting AG Jeffrey Rosen, and a recent AP report said that the president was “considering whether to pressure Rosen to make the special counsel appointment or, if needed, to replace the acting attorney general with someone more likely to carry out his wishes.”
