Trump Tells Scott Jennings: Without Tariffs, ‘Half’ of My ‘7 Peace Deals’ Wouldn’t Have Happened
President Donald Trump boldly claimed that without tariffs, he wouldn’t have been able to secure “half” of the numerous peace deals he claims to have secured in his first year back in office.
The statement was shared on X by CNN pundit Scott Jennings as part of a broader interview with Trump on his radio show that will air later Tuesday.
In it, Trump said it would be a nationwide “disaster” if he weren’t able to use tariffs as a negotiation tactic.
Without them, Trump said, “Our country will be weak, pathetic, and not rich.”

“It will be a disaster if that is lost for our country,” Trump said in a preview clip shared by Jennings. “Our country will be weak, pathetic, and not rich. It will be, you know, I’ve put us in a position — even negotiating — I’ve negotiated seven peace deals because I was able to use tariffs. Without tariffs, many of those deals — half of those deals — I wouldn’t have been able to do. It gives us tremendous negotiating power. It gives us tremendous economic power. And it’s the same exact thing they’ve done to us for 30 years — and they’re still doing it. If that decision would be lost, it would be an economic disaster for the United States. The United States will be the richest country. If we lose that decision, we’ll be one of the great poor countries.”
The full interview drops at 2 p.m. on Jennings’ radio show.
