Hamas downplayed President Donald Trump’s optimism Tuesday after he declared that Israel had “agreed” to a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza and called on the militant group to accept what he called a final proposal to end the nearly two-year war.
The statement, posted to his Truth Social platform, is the most explicit claim yet by the president that a peace framework is within reach:
My Representatives had a long and productive meeting with the Israelis today on Gaza. Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to finalize the 60 Day CEASEFIRE, during which time we will work with all parties to end the War. The Qataris and Egyptians, who have worked very hard to help bring Peace, will deliver this final proposal. I hope, for the good of the Middle East, that Hamas takes this Deal, because it will not get better — IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE. Thank you for your attention to this matter!
Israeli officials have not confirmed the terms or timing of any agreement. While reports suggest both sides are more engaged than before, no negotiating teams have been dispatched to Cairo or Doha, where indirect talks have stalled for months.
Still, Israeli newspapers reported signs of movement. Israel Hayom cited an official who said Hamas had made “concessions,” prompting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to bring forward his trip to Washington. A government source quoted by Yedioth Ahronoth said a “window of opportunity” had opened.
“So far, there has been no breakthrough,” Hamas senior official Taher al-Nunu told AFP.
Trump is expected to meet Netanyahu at the White House on Monday.
Behind the scenes, US envoy Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are leading talks modeled closely on earlier Israeli proposals.
Israeli polls show growing public appetite for a deal, and Netanyahu’s domestic position has shifted after military officials declared that key objectives had been met, according to The Guardian.
