Trump’s Commerce Sec. Vows On NBC ‘There’s Going to Be No Recession!’ — Right Before Trump Himself Refused to Make the Same Pledge On Fox

President Donald Trump’s commerce secretary is making a big promise that Trump himself won’t.

In an interview Sunday on NBC’s Meet the Press, Kristen Welker confronted Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick about the prospect of a recession.

“Consumer sentiment is dropping,” Welker said. “Inflation has ticked up. Major banks like JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs now say a recession in the next 12 months is becoming more likely. Should Americans brace for a recession?”

Lutnick was unequivocal.

“Absolutely not,” Lutnick said. “Anybody who bets against Donald Trump…It’s like the same people who thought Donald Trump wasn’t a winner a year ago. Donald Trump is a winner. He’s going to win for the American people. That’s just the way it’s going to be. There’s going to be no recession in America.”

The commerce secretary went on to argue in favor of reciprocal tariffs, and claimed it will lead to massive investment in the U.S. from corporations far and wide.

“We’ll unleash America out to the world,” Lutnick said. “Grow our economy in a way we’ve never grown before. You are going to see over the next two years the greatest set of growth coming from America as Americans. You saw it, 1.3 trillion of new investment coming into America that – think of all those jobs. And remember, each trillion of investment in America is 1% of growth GDP. So Donald Trump is bringing growth to America. I would never bet on recession. No chance.”

But did the commerce secretary write a check that President Trump doesn’t think he can cash? The more cautious words of President Trump himself suggest he might have.

Trump sat down with Fox News anchor Maria Bartiromo for an interview on Sunday Morning Futures which premiered at 10 a.m. ET — one hour after Lutnick’s Meet the Press interview aired in many markets. And the president refused to make the same vow that Lutnick did.

“Are you expecting a recession this year?” Bartiromo asked.

“I hate to predict things like that,” Trump said, hedging. “There is a period of transition because what we’re doing is very big. We’re bringing wealth back to America. That’s a big thing. And there are always periods of… it takes a little time. It takes a little time.”
