‘Did You See This Sh*t Today?’ Mediaite’s Tommy Christopher Rages at Axios Over Mar-a-Lago ‘DJ Trump’ Puff Piece

Mediaite’s own Tommy Christopher appeared on The Dean Obeidallah Show to talk about his work as a White House correspondent, his journalism career, how he churns out 800 posts a day (approximately) on Mediaite, and stories he hates — namely, a super softball piece from Axios about former President Donald Trump’s Spotify playlist.

The story in question was published on Axios on Thursday and was “reported” by Jim VanDehei and Mike Allen. It describes Trump’s taste in music and the manner in which he “deejays” at his Mar-a-Lago resort. Here’s an excerpt:

At his oceanside retreat in Palm Beach, Trump controls the surround-sound stereo system on the breezy dining patio with his big iPad and its Spotify list. Regulars jokingly call it the “Deejay T” performance.

Why it matters: To those who know him best, Trump spinning through his golden oldies provides a telling lens into his style on much bigger stages. It captures his obsession with a few familiar hits — controlling the volume, never changing.

The somewhat precious dive into Trump’s Spotify playlist had Christopher raging to host Dean Obeidallah:

TOMMY CHRISTOPHER: Did you see this shit today from Axios about his fucking playlists?

DEAN OBEIDALLAH: No, but that’s the typical bullshit that we see in corporate media.

TOMMY CHRISTOPHER: Oh my God, dude. It was like, you know, like the first line is some shit like, “Oh, he’s like a, he’s like a kid with a kid with a new toy” because he loves his iPad and his playlist, and he’s got a velvet rope, and people come up to him and they want to hear his music and blah, blah, blah. And I was like, what are you talking about? It’s like a whole, it was sickening.

DEAN OBEIDALLAH: And what’s on his playlist, the January 6th Choir? Like, it’s like the al-Qaeda choir playing before rallies. This is unbelievable.

TOMMY CHRISTOPHER: Yes, yes, but also like, he’s he likes “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinead O’Connor. Who gives a shit?

DEAN OBEIDALLAH: She would hate him. She’s dead now. If she was alive, she would despise him.

TOMMY CHRISTOPHER: I know, I know, but, like, you know.

DEAN OBEIDALLAH: She’d say, “Stop playing my music.”

TOMMY CHRISTOPHER: It was a long thing about all this, like, “Oh, and Trump controls the volume!” Oh, wow. Really? Thanks for the scoop. You know, like…

DEAN OBEIDALLAH: “He listens with his ears. He’s amazing.”

TOMMY CHRISTOPHER: Yeah. They had a picture of him with, like a DJ headset on, like a photo illustration. Like it was a big joke. And like… And then I guess the point of this story was that it’s sort of like his rallies because he always plays the same songs and he always says the same shit at his rallies. But like, it’s like you said… “What? What?” This guy is on trial for starting a riot that got people killed.
