Elon Musk Awkwardly Breaks Into Song After Joe Rogan Presses Him on Taliban Twitter Account

Since his $44 billion purchase of Twitter/X a year ago, Elon Musk has been the target of criticism for letting the social media platform spread misinformation, hate speech, and even propaganda without much consequence. One such account enjoying Musk’s free-for-all is the Taliban – the Sunni Islamist group in Afghanistan that provided the Al Qaeda terrorists responsible for the 9/11 attacks a haven. When Joe Rogan asked Musk about the Taliban’s Twitter presence on his podcast, Musk responded – by singing.

The conversation between Musk and Rogan has been making the rounds with many tidbits standing out, but this moment is particularly awkward since it looks like Musk might not actually have an answer. When Rogan brings up the fact that “the Taliban is on Twitter,” his statement is followed up by what feels like a strained pause for several seconds. When Musk finally speaks, it’s this:

Musk: Like I always think of, like, “Hey, Mr. Taliban, tally me banana.” [LAUGHTER]

Rogan: [LAUGHTER]

Musk: “Daylight come and I wanna go home… “

So, that’s fine.

To be fair, he did explain why he thought it was okay that the Taliban, which is designated as a global terrorist group and is responsible for insurgent attacks on its own civilians as well as the violent oppression of women and girls in Afghanistan, gets to post memes on Twitter like everyone else who wishes to express their opinions freely:

So the point at, the point is that from my standpoint, that is that X, aka Twitter, should represent the sort of collective consciousness of humanity. So now that that means that there are going to be views on there that you don’t like or disagree with. But that’s humanity. So are you going to exclude them or not? Now, I mean, if if somebody, you know, breaks the law, then, then, the account is suspended. I mean, if they actively advocate murder, then the account is suspended.

The Taliban does actively advocate murder, but maybe someone should tell Musk that they are also actively restricting freedom of expression, at least according to Amnesty International. You know, putting limits on the “collective consciousness of humanity.”
