LeBron James Is NOT an Anti-Vaxxer: Lakers GM Says Team Will be ‘Fully Vaccinated’ by NBA Opener
For months, NBA fans and analysts have wondered if LeBron James has or will get vaccinated against Covid-19. After James called it a “family matter,” Los Angeles Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka divulged on the private decision, announcing the entire roster will be fully vaccinated by the NBA season opener.
“On opening night when we play the Golden State Warriors, all of the players that are currently signed on our roster – that night will be deemed fully vaccinated,” Pelinka told reporters during a Thursday press conference. “We’re grateful for that.”
Pelinka said the team collaborated with players, family members, doctors, agents, and UCLA Health to reach their fully vaxxed status. The Lakers opening night opponent, the Golden State Warriors are currently struggling to reach a similar status, with forward Andrew Wiggins refusing the jab. Wiggins’ decision will make him unavailable for Warriors’ home games, considering San Francisco’s vaccine mandate for indoor events.
The NBA cannot mandate the vaccine for its athletes without approval from the Players Association, which they already declined.
“We’re grateful that we won’t have interruptions caused by unvaccinated status of a player of staff member,” Pelinka added.
James hasn’t discussed his vaccination status, calling it “not a big deal,” in May. “Anything I do off the floor is predicated to my family for the majority or 99.9% of that,” he added.
But there were indications that James may have received the jab earlier this year, when the NBA superstar broke league protocols to attend an outdoor event prior to the first round of the playoffs. Had he been unvaccinated, James should have been forced to quarantine, but the league deemed him available for the Lakers playoff series.
