Pro Golfer Brooks Koepka Opens Up About Saudi-PGA Merger and Confirms a Massive Contract Got Him to Defect to LIV Golf
Professional golfer Brooks Koepka confirmed that he left the PGA Tour solely because of the lucrative contract offered to him by rival LIV Golf.
Koepka appeared on Thursday’s episode of BS w/ Jake Paul. At one point during the 80-minute conversation, Paul asked him about the merger between LIV Golf, backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, and the PGA Tour — as well as Koepka’s decision to leave the PGA for LIV.
While he didn’t get into specific figures, Koepka confirmed the deal was massive.
“It was good,” Koepka said with a smile when Paul asked him about the contract.
Paul then asked him to elaborate a little further on the figure amount.
“It was nine (figures),” Koepka said, implying the deal was worth at least $100 million.
Koepka added that many players were inspired to join LIV thanks to fellow golfer Phil Mickelson, who was outspoken in his demand for more player rights.
“I’m gonna be honest with you: I signed for the dough,” Koepka continued. “I’m 100% behind that. Tomorrow, I could go get in a car accident and never play golf again, but my family’s taken care of; and that was a big thing for me.”
In terms of the merger between LIV and the PGA, Koepka said players are still waiting for details just like everyone else.
“I know as much about it as anybody else,” he said. “It’s a merger. That’s all I know. There’s gonna be a new (company) where, hopefully, all the best players in the world can get back together (and) everybody can see them in one week, one event instead of it being so fractured.”
