Brit Hume Rebuts Trump Talking Point That Zelensky Doesn’t ‘Have the Cards’ vs. Russia: ‘He Apparently Has Quite a Few’

Fox News Chief Political Analyst Brit Hume said that despite President Donald Trump’s words to the contrary, Ukraine “has quite a few cards to play” against Russia.

Over the weekend, Ukraine carried out a drone attack deep inside Russian territory, where more than 40 grounded warplanes were damaged or destroyed. Ukraine’s intelligence service said the attack took more than 18 months to plan. In February, Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office, where he said his counterpart has no leverage over Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“You’re not in a good position!” Trump said in a scolding tone. “You don’t have the cards right now! With us, you start having cards.”

On Monday’s Special Report on Fox News, guest host Shannon Bream reported on the attack and welcomed Hume to the program.

“Brit, this is a big embarrassment for the Russians as well, along with the losses,” she noted.

“Yeah, it certainly does establish that this country, whose president was being told at the White House that he didn’t have any cards to play, that he apparently has quite a few cards to play.”

Hume went on to observe that the Ukrainians claim that the drone attack neutralized 30% to 40% of Russia’s strategic bombing force.

“That’s a major setback for Russia,” he continued. “It is an embarrassing intelligence failure and an embarrassing defense failure. And who knows what else the Ukrainians, who have proved pretty ingenious, have up their sleeves?”

Trump said on the campaign trail that he would bring about an end to the war, but so far that has proved to be difficult. In April, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that if a deal seems out of reach, the U.S. may “move on” from the conflict.
