Chris Wallace Laughs in Disbelief After Wolf Blitzer Says He Was ‘Impressive’ Moderating Disastrous Trump-Biden Debate

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer made network colleague Chris Wallace relieve his moderation of the first debate between Donald Trump and Joe Biden in 2020.

Hosted by Fox News – where Wallace was employed at the time – the Presidential Commission debate which aired on all networks became infamous before it even ended. Trump constantly interrupted Biden despite Wallace’s futile pleas for civility.

On Wednesday’s edition of The Situation Room, Blitzer welcomed Wallace to the show and replayed snippets from the debate, all of which involved interruptions and crosstalk.

Blitzer noted that Biden and Trump have agreed to two debates, the first of which will be moderated by CNN next month and feature no audience and will cut the microphones of candidates who have not been recognized to speak.

“Do you think that’s gonna make a difference?” Blitzer asked Wallace.

“No,” he replied. “I don’t think either will.”

Wallace said the plan to turn off microphones seems ill-conceived.

“You can’t really control the mics,” he stated. “If it’s just, you’re gonna make a two-minute statement, I’m gonna make a two-minute statement, that’s one thing. But in a free-flow conversation back and forth, I don’t see how you turn off the mics.”

He went on to say he does not think the lack of an audience will affect the debate.

“So, you don’t necessarily think there will be a repeat of what you went through,” Blitzer said.

“Well it depends,” Wallace replied. “I mean, if Donald Trump wants to interrupt and make a circus of it again, he can do it and I don’t think there’s really any way to stop him. But I think he’d be foolish to do that. He took a real hit in the polls after his performance in that debate. I mean, I was at Fox then. We had somebody count. He interrupted Joe Biden or me, 145 times in 90 minutes. That’s more than once a minute. If he does that, I think it would be a big mistake and he’ll pay a price for it.”

Blitzer then offered a compliment.

“I, of course, watched that debate,” he said. “You were very, very impressive as the moderator.”

Wallace responded by bursting out laughing and Blitzer moved on.
