CNN Breaks Down Problems With John Kelly’s Remarks on Rob Porter: ‘Somebody Is Lying Here’

CNN’s Anderson Cooper opened tonight by looking at the comments John Kelly made today about Rob Porter and how, well, something seems very off here.

Kelly today defended his handling of the domestic abuse allegations against the former White House aide and denied he ever considered resigning.

Cooper opened tonight by saying, “Having heard so many misrepresentations and so many insultingly untrue or incomplete statements from the White House, we simply could not imagine they would even dream of bringing it up again.”

And yet.

Cooper said the White House is “gaslighting” over this entire episode, while Kelly’s comments today reportedly stunned White House staffers.

He said Kelly’s full explanation about what he knew and when raises serious questions about both the timeline and the White House’s response:

“What makes General Kelly’s timeline today so bizarre is we’ve had evidence almost from the beginning suggesting it simply is not true and there’s every reason to believe that he knows that better than we do.”

Cooper also brought on Jim Acosta to discuss Kelly’s comments today. Acosta brought up the problems in the timeline Kelly laid out:

“He said he did not become aware of these red flags in Rob Porter’s background until February 6th. Anderson, the FBI director, Christopher Wray, testified just recently that they delivered a completed FBI background check to the White House security office in July of last year. Our own sources tell us that White House officials, including Chief of Staff John Kelly, were made aware of much of this last November. So somebody’s lying here. There are lies being told, and it appears we’re not getting a straight story from the general.”
