CNN’s Kasie Hunt Grills Democratic Governor About Who Is Leading His Party: ‘Sir, With All Due Respect…’
CNN’s Kasie Hunt pressed Democratic Colorado Governor Jared Polis on Friday about who, if anyone, is currently the face of leadership in the Democratic Party.
Polis declined to name any names and argued Democrats would win over the hearts of Americans with good ideas – no matter who presents them.
On Friday’s edition of The Arena, Hunt noted Democrats are still trying to find their footing after losing the White House and Senate last November. Democrats also failed to take a slim majority from the GOP in the House.
She further noted CNN recently surveyed Democratic voters as to who they believed was the voice of the Democratic Party. Ten percent of those who responded with a name offered that of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY).
Hunt asked the governor, “Who do you think is the leader of the Democratic Party right now?”
Polis replied, “Our true north, certainly my true north, are ideas to make life better for people. I think who delivers on them are secondary. We need to make life more affordable for Americans. We need to make it safer, reduce crime.”
The Colorado Democrat added, “The minute politics becomes about the who rather than the what, I think is when we start losing.” Hunt responded:
But, sir, with all due respect, the main sort of message out of the 2024 election that I’ve heard from Democrats across the country is that, “Our ideas were there, we just didn’t have the right people to sell them.” And don’t you need a person to stand up to a candidate like Donald Trump, for example?
Polis said voters would ultimately evaluate Democrats on results rather than the personalities of those who espouse ideas.
He concluded, “The people of Colorado will judge me and other elected officials here based on how well we deliver.”
