Co-Hosts Wince as Jesse Watters’ Escalator ‘Sabotage’ Bit Turns Ugly: ‘Leave the UN’ or ‘Bomb It’
Jesse Watters’ co-hosts on The Five winced as his bit about President Donald Trump’s escalator mishap at the United Nations on Tuesday turned ugly – joking that the U.S. should “leave” the organization or “bomb” its New York City headquarters.
The president’s arrival at the General Assembly with First Lady Melania Trump was marred when an escalator stopped working right as he stepped on it, and a teleprompter failed before his speech to fellow world leaders.
What resulted was finger-pointing, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt vowing to find out who was responsible, reporting that some UN employees had previously joked about turning off escalators to frustrate Trump, while a United Nations spokesperson suggested the president’s entourage may have accidentally triggered the emergency stop.
Watters, however, speaking on The Five on Tuesday night, insisted both instances were “sabotage.”
“They sabotaged him, and they could have hurt the first lady,” he claimed. “Trump would have fallen and then would’ve gotten back up. And then they sabotaged the teleprompter.”
“I mean, this is an insurrection,” he continued, leaning in with signature bombastic hyperbole, as one co-host laughed.
He added: “And what we need to do is either leave the UN or we need to bomb it.”
The comments drew winces from his co-hosts and laughter at the ridiculousness of it.
Encouraged, Watters pressed on, proposing to “gas it” instead to prevent fallout across the city before suggesting Trump “demolish the building,” and convert the site into “expensive condominiums” overlooking the East River.
“Let’s not do that,” the co-hosts pressed back.
“No, this is absolutely unacceptable, and I hope they get to the bottom of it. And I hope they really injure – emotionally – the people that did it,” he added, in clarification.
