David Axelrod Says Trump Is ‘Unsettled’ by Harris-Walz Ticket: ‘You Can See It in His Tweets’

CNN political analyst David Axelrod said former President Donald Trump is “unsettled” by the shakeup on the Democratic presidential ticket.

President Joe Biden ended his reelection bid last month, making Vice President Kamala Harris the presumptive nominee. On Tuesday, she chose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to be her running mate. Hours later, Walz gave a stirring speech to a crowd in Philadelphia, where he mocked Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance (R-OH) to raucous applause.

Afterward, Axelrod said Democrats had “a great night” and that they’ve flipped the script.

“Such an interesting transformation has happened,” the former adviser to Barack Obama said. “Suddenly, Donald Trump feels like the embattled incumbent. I mean, that’s the way he’s behaving. And they are presenting themselves as the turn-the-page candidates. And that’s the field that we got tonight.”

Axelrod went on to say Walz “delivered some heavy blows” to the Republican ticket.

“But he did it with that kind of gentle humor that actually lands well,” he said. “And I have to say, Trump is getting– he’s unsettled by this change in the environment. You can see it in his tweets and so on. And there is a kind of grinding quality to the Trump campaign right now that plays very badly against what you saw tonight, which was very joyful and positive. And there was this feeling of possibility.”

Before Biden, 81, dropped out of the race, the Trump campaign was laser-focused on Biden’s age as a campaign issue. Now that the president is not running for reelection, Trump, 78, is the oldest major party presidential nominee in history.

The former president has made race a main focus of his campaign. Last week, he bizarrely questioned Harris’s Blackness. This week on his Truth Social platform, he’s taken to misspelling her name as “Kamabla” on purpose. In one particularly unhinged rant on the social media site, Trump claimed “Kamabla” and “Barrack HUSSEIN Obama” conspired to steal the presidency from Biden. He also claimed the Harris-Walz ticket features “the most Radical Left duo in American history.”
