Dem Pollster: Dems Shouldn’t Defend Obamacare, But That ‘Doesn’t Mean Repeal It’

Celinda Lake, president of the Democratic polling firm Lake Research Partners, recently told journalists that surveys her firm has conducted ahead of the 2014 midterm election cycle indicate incumbent Democrats should not embrace the Affordable Care Act as it is presently written. Lake appeared on Fox & Friends on Thursday morning, where she repeated this advice and told Democrats up for reelection in 2014 to “mend it” rather than “defend it.”

“That doesn’t mean repeal it,” Lake said. “People think there are serious problems, and people also think it’s the solution to serious problems. So, what we need to do is keep what’s good and fix what isn’t.”

Fox host Steve Doocy asked if voters will be skeptical of a “fix it” message more than four years after the law’s passage. “Only 11% of the public wants the Republican alternative, according to the Kaiser health news poll,” Lake replied. “What people want to do is they don’t want to start all over again.”

“Until the program started to get implemented, it wasn’t clear what would work and what wouldn’t work,” Lake continued.

Doocy asked Lake about a recent Fox poll which showed that 43% of registered voters would vote against a candidate who supported the health care reform law while only 30% would support that candidate.

“That’s pretty Republican, is what it is,” Lake replied. “43 percent of the public is Republican and Republicans are completely against the health care plan, but there are not too many Democrats who are relying on Republicans to get them elected.”
