Democrat Accuses Justice Thomas of ‘Not Being Honest’ In Bump Stock Decision: ‘Innocent Americans Are Going to Die’
Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM) had strong words for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s decision on Friday that struck down the ban on bump stocks.
During a segment with CNN anchor Brianna Keilar, Heinrich said Thomas was “not being honest” in the majority opinion he issued on the case and called the decision “incredibly offensive.” Keilar pointed out that Thomas wrote heavily on the mechanisms of bump stocks and how they worked compared to firearms without one, quoting his decision: “A bump stock does not convert a semi-automatic rifle into a machine gun, any more than a shooter with a lightning-fast trigger finger does.”
Keilar played segments from a YouTube video by Zach Nelson (username JerryRigEverything) that demonstrated an AR-15 rifle being fired both with and without a bump stock. After pointing out the “undeniable difference” between the demonstrations, she asked Heinrich for his reaction:
Keilar: [W]hat do you say to that sentence from Justice Thomas?
Heinrich: It’s just not honest. I know these mechanisms. I’ve seen not just the videos, but I’ve used some of these weapons. He’s not being honest about what this does, and it is incredibly dangerous. There’s no legitimate use for these. Who is going to use these bump stocks? It’s going to be street gangs and cartels and mass shooters. And innocent Americans are going to die because of this decision. I find it incredibly troubling.
