Democratic Gov. On Fall Elections: “I’m Glad I’m Not On The Ballot!”
Sunday morning on State of the Union with John King, Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, a Democrat whose term is coming to a close, was asked about the health of her party as the midterm elections approach this fall. “Would you want to be a Democrat on the ballot this year?” King asked. Granholm’s answer was far from comforting: “No, no!” she responded definitively and with a hearty chuckle. “Personally, no, I’m glad I’m not on the ballot at all. I wouldn’t want to be an incumbent on the ballot,” she reiterated. A candid response, indeed, and you know — truth hurts?
She continued: “Democrats have taken more of the heat on this, but I think it’s incumbents who are really the endangered species, or at least about to become more endangered. Anybody who’s in office will suffer the wrath of the voter.” As a political figure not often on the national stage, Granholm’s insights might be even more in touch with voters than an instantly recognizable, and thus well-rehearsed, office holder.
