Fox Host Asks if Trump Needs to ‘Step Up and Do More’ About Christian Persecution in Nigeria
Fox’s John Roberts wondered if President Donald Trump should be playing a bigger role in tackling persecution against Christians in Nigeria during a segment on Friday, asking, “Does this president need to step up and do more?”
The guest on the segment was Ryan Brown, the CEO of Open Doors U.S., an organization supporting persecuted Christians, who shared that “across Sub-Saharan Africa, there are about 16.2 million that have been forced from their homes,” with “many of them living in horrific conditions.”
“Open Door keeps track of Christians who are killed around the world in religious violence,” said Roberts. “For 2025, 4,476 Christians murdered so far worldwide — 3,100 of them in Nigeria. Nigeria is a country that the United States has a fairly close relationship with. Does this president need to step up and do more, or does the United States at large need to do more? What could the U.S. do to try to stem the killings?”
While Brown did not respond with any ideas of direct action that the U.S. could take, he referenced the recent shake-up in Nigeria last week, in which President Bola Tinubu overhauled his 45-member cabinet, bringing in seven new ministers, removing five, and shifting 10 others into different roles.
“More Christians were killed in Nigeria last year than the rest of the world combined,” continued Brown. “According to other sources, you are six times more likely, if you are a Christian, to be killed in Nigeria than if you are a Muslim.”
“So while the Nigerian government is seeking to state that this is not religiously-motivated,” concluded Brown, “boy, we are hearing a much different story from those that are being impacted.”
Also in the segment, Roberts mentioned a September episode of Real Time with Bill Maher, in which Bill Maher remarked that the situation in Nigeria “is so much more of a genocide attempt than what is going on in Gaza.” He also mentioned an October 24 tweet from Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) that read, “When Christians are targeted and victimized by radical Islamic terrorism, the woke media stay silent. It’s unacceptable. We need to stand up and fight back.”
