Fox’s Howard Kurtz Says Trump ‘May Have Just Been Letting Off Steam’ When Reportedly Wishing for ‘Hitler’s Generals’

Fox News’s Howard Kurtz said that while he believes Ret. Gen. John Kelly isn’t making up his explosive claims about Donald Trump, the former president may not have been sincere.

In an article published in The Atlantic on Tuesday, Kelly, who was Trump’s chief of staff, went on the record to say Trump told him he wished he had “Hitler’s generals” because of their alleged loyalty. The report also relayed an anecdote from a source who claimed Trump disparagingly referred to a murdered U.S. soldier as “a fucking Mexican.” Separately, the New York Times released audio on Tuesday in which Kelly alleged that the former president, whom he said fits the definition of a “fascist,” told him that Hitler “did some good things.”

“There’s obviously a lot of stuff being thrown at the wall here,” Martha MacCallum told Kurtz on Thursday’s installment of The Story. “And the question is, do you think – given the state of this race – that any of the sticks or that it changes anyone’s opinions this late in the game?”

“First of all, I think that John Kelly is a highly respected four-star [general] who lost a son in Afghanistan,” Kurtz noted. “And I don’t believe that he is making things up. And nobody can really know what the private conversations may have been.”

Kurtz then added a caveat to his assessment, stating that the former president was perhaps venting during particularly frustrating moments.

“However, at the same time, Trump may have just been letting off steam about the loyalty that he wanted from his generals compared to what he thought about Hitler’s generals,” he continued. “And I think that obviously is not something that was made for public consumption. I think if these things were said, it was not an effort to say anything publicly about that. But his accusations are not gonna move 10 votes.”

Trump responded to Kelly on Wednesday in typical Trump fashion.

“John Kelly is a LOWLIFE, and a bad General, whose advice in the White House I no longer sought, and told him to MOVE ON!” the ex-president wrote on Truth Social.
