Fox’s Tyrus Admits ‘I Kinda Dig Seeing a Black George Washington’ During Discussion on ‘Biased’ AI Program

The right have been up in arms over Google’s Gemini AI program producing ethnically diverse depictions of historical figures, taking them extremely literally and accusing the company of “anti-conservative bias.” But Fox News contributor and OutKick host Tyrus admitted he didn’t mind seeing a Black Founding Father, and maybe the fun of seeing one was kind of the point?

Fox News anchors Bill Hemmer and Martha MacCallum (filling in for Dana Perino) welcomed host Carley Shimkus and Tyrus to discuss Gemini’s “blunders” and how Google is “paying for its mistakes”:

Shimkus: But this is going to become a bigger issue with artificial intelligence, especially if AI becomes what people consider an unbiased teaching tool, which, if you’re in the industry, that’s the goal, because people will think, “Well, AI is a machine, how could it possibly be biased?” But you see, what happened here is that AI is designed by humans which input their biases in artificial intelligence. So Google apologized for this Gemini issue. Don’t trust that apology for a second. They’re apologizing because they got caught. And I think what’s going to happen in the future is that they’re going to become more subtle about this bias.

Hemmer: I wonder if Google’s already big enough to overcome this. Maybe it takes a year or two years. I don’t know. But I know DuckDuckGo, another internet search —

Shimkus: Engine.

Hemmer: Thank you, is already advertising in places like Fox News and others.

Tyrus: You know, basically we just need to bring back Encyclopedia Britannica.

During the conversations, some of the Gemini-generated images were shown in the background, including images of lawyers and astronauts of different ethnicities and genders. Fox latched on to the more specific images of historical figures such as the Founding Fathers and Popes, all of whom were white men. But even Tyrus admitted:

But the other side of this, I kind of, as a brother, I kind of dig seeing Black George Washington. I like that, you know, and I was like, you know what? I could be a George Washington. So I looked at it from the positive side of it. But it’s not just against conservatives, just to be fair. It’s not just against conservatives.

MacCallum then got defensive, saying it was the “context” of the thing, that if someone was seeking an actual image of George Washington — which doesn’t technically exist except in artists’ renderings — then Gemini failed on that point.
