GOP Rep. Coffman Calls on Trump to Fire Stephen Miller: ‘This Is A Human Rights Mess’

Rep. Mike Coffman (R-CO) is the latest member of the GOP to condemn President Donald Trump‘s policy of separating families at the border, but he’s not looking to blame Donald Trump.

Rather, Coffman has set his sights on a much lower-profile but arguably equally influential figure – Stephen Miller.

“The President should fire Stephen Miller now,” Coffman said. “This is a human rights mess. It is on the President to clean it up and fire the people responsible for making it.”

Miller is a longtime Trump aide who has been the author of or at least very close adviser on the president’s most xenophobic policies. When the “zero tolerance” policy came to light, many reportedly suspected that Miller had something to do with it; indeed, as The New York Times reported over the weekend, Miller was instrumental in bringing the policy about.

You may also remember Miller from his brown-nosing, frankly terrifying interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper at the beginning of this year, during which Tapper had to repeatedly ask Miller to “settle down.”

Coffman’s singling out of Miller perhaps represents the GOP wanting to distance itself further from the more fringe actors in Trump’s administration, who all too often have been deeply influential.
