GOP Sen. John Kennedy: Trump Should Have Talked About Russia in SOTU

Sen. John Kennedy appeared on New Day with Chris Cuomo on Wednesday, and expressed some dismay at President Donald Trump’s omission of Russian sanctions from the topics he addressed in his State of the Union.

“I wish he talked about sanctions on the Russians,” the Republican senator said. “And explained to us why he is not immediately imposing the sanctions.

“Because I think President Putin has acted for the past five years like a thug.”

The Trump administration declined this week to impose new sanctions on Russia, flouting laws intended to punish the Kremlin for interference in the 2016 election.

That comes as a Russian jet flew within five feet of a US Navy surveillance plane, which led the State Department to accuse Russia of “flagrantly violating existing agreements and international law.”

Cuomo remarked how strange it is for Trump to not mention the Russian jet incident as president, a point Kennedy seemed to agree on.

The New Day host then asked Kennedy about the Nunes memo set to be released by the president, which purports to show bias at the highest levels of the FBI.

“We can’t let the politics of the moment cloud our judgment,” Kennedy said, arguing that “if there’s classified information in that memo, it shouldn’t be released.”

Kennedy continued that Democrats should be able to release their own memo, and added that unlike some of his colleagues, he has trust in the FBI.
