GOP Senator Tells Kristen Welker Trump’s Presidency Is Just What The Founders Intended

Sen. John Curtis (R-UT) told NBC’s Kristen Welker Sunday that President Donald Trump’s young term in the White House is not a “crisis” but a lesson in “civics'” the country’s founders foresaw centuries ago.

Curtis explained that the “tension” between Trump, the judiciary, and Congress should feel normal and that is, in his estimation, a sign of a healthy government.

On Sunday’s Meet the Press, Welker pressed Curtis about Trump’s calls for US District Court Judge James Boasberg to be impeached.

Boasberg has drawn the ire of Trump and his allies over an executive branch order to halt deportations conducted under Trump’s invocation of the Aliens Enemies Act of 1798.

On her show, Welker pressed Curtis about the fighting between Trump and federal judges.

Welker asked, “Do you think it’s appropriate for President Trump to be talking about impeachment in the context of this federal judge?”

Curtis replied, “So listen, I would never be the one to say to the President what he can say, what he can’t say. I’m going to tell you, if it were me, I probably wouldn’t be poking the people that are going to make decisions about me, but that’s me, and the president is going to do what the president does.”

Welker noted Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had portrayed Trump’s tension with the judiciary as a “constitutional crisis.”

The host asked Curtis if he felt Schumer was going too far. The senator replied:

Well, listen, it’s easy to throw out. And by the way, when everything is a crisis, nothing is a crisis. President Trump has been very clear multiple times he will obey court orders. So I – I don’t see the crisis. And like I said, I see the civics lesson. Like, people need to be watching this and say, this is – this is actually what our founders intended – this – intended. This – this tension right, between the three different branches. And Congress has our role in this, and – and you could fairly say we need to do more, and I’m with you, right? I think a lot of this opens up for the president when we don’t do our job.
