Hannity on Cohen Bombshell: ‘He Was Probably Forced by Prosecutors’ to Change His Story
Sean Hannity fulfilled expectations on Tuesday night when he offered a defense of the president in light of today’s double bombshell in the cases of Michael Cohen and Paul Manafort — even suggesting Cohen was “forced by prosecutors” to change his story.
Both members of Trump’s inner circle pled guilty to the respective legal charges against them, and in Cohen’s case, he told the court that Trump personally ordered his campaign finance law-violating hush money payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal. Of course, Hannity dug into the “false reporting, speculation and hysteria” in the media over all of this, and harped on and on about how Manafort’s case does not prove the Trump-Russia collusion theory.
In terms of Cohen’s charges, Hannity started addressing them while noting that “far worse crimes [were] committed by others. They didn’t get charged.” He also deferred to a point Bret Baier made earlier today about how its an open question whether Cohen’s campaign law infractions were criminal violations that can be connected to Trump.
As Hannity continued his monologue, he talked about changes in Cohen’s story while saying of today’s events “I would argue – knowing him all the years I have known him – he was probably forced by prosecutors.”
Side note, remember when it was revealed Hannity was a client of Cohen’s legal expertise?
Anyway, after Hannity continued to emphasize the lack of connection to the Russia investigation, he eventually acknowledged that lying to the FBI is a bad idea, as are bank fraud and tax evasion. Still, he brought this full circle to say that Mueller is only charging Cohen and Manafort because of their Trump connection, and that the special counsel investigation is overblown.
“Don’t be friends with Donald Trump? Is this not now the ‘witch hunt’ the president has been saying, an attempt to turn the screws as Judge Ellis said about Manafort to would-be witnesses to find dirt on one man? In other words so that they will sing or compose to either prosecute or impeach the President of the United States. And if so, how is that not political, selective, persecution and not prosecution? I don’t care if you are liberal or conservative we better look at where the country is today. We learned lessons. Pay your taxes, don’t lie on a loan application, don’t lie to the F.B.I. But this is it? Robert Mueller, are you proud of this? Did we need you for 500 days for this? How did we go from Russia collusion to this?”
