‘He Canceled’: House Republican Who Just Got an Earful From Voters Bails on CNN Interview
A Republican congressman punched out of a scheduled interview with CNN less than 24 hours after he was read the riot act by constituents at a town hall.
Angry denizens of Georgia’s 7th congressional district took turns teeing off on Rep. Rich McCormick (R-GA) Thursday over the massive federal layoffs and spending freezes happening since President Donald Trump took office for the second time. The cuts are part of White House adviser Elon Musk’s ostensible attempt at reducing costs.
On Friday’s edition of The Lead on CNN, Jake Tapper interviewed Rep. Cliff Bentz (R-OR) and asked the lawmaker about the cuts before revealing that McCormick no-showed.
“If it is truly important to reduce the size of the federal government, should Congress show their sincerity, demonstrate your sincerity by making 10% cuts to your staffs?” the host asked Bentz.
“I would anticipate just such a suggestion,” Bentz replied. “And we in fact discussed it with my staff literally over the past week. So, it hasn’t been suggested yet by leadership. But if it is so suggested, I will support it. I think everybody has to step up.”
Bentz noted he held his own town halls in recent days and was given a hard time by constituents. Tapper wrapped up the interview and said:
We should note we were also supposed to speak with Georgia Congressman Rich McCormick. He was booked when we started the show. We were under the impression he was coming, but he canceled the appearance less than an hour ago.
