House Democrat Says ‘I’m Just Gonna Sit Back and Sip My Tea’ and Watch Republicans Fight Each Other
Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) said Democrats are in no mood to help Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) as he takes heat from hardline members of his conference, Elon Musk, and President-Elect Donald Trump.
On Tuesday, Johnson introduced a continuing resolution that would fund the government through March 14, thus avoiding a shutdown set to begin on Dec. 21. Some of the more conservative members of the House grumbled about the legislation, but matters started to go downhill for Johnson when Musk tweeted against the resolution more than 70 times, including several posts that were simply inaccurate. Ultimately, Trump followed suit and threatened Republicans who backed the bill with primaries. Shortly afterward, Johnson scrapped it.
“There is no new agreement right now,” Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) said.
Crockett joined Wednesday’s Alex Wagner Tonight on MSNBC, where the host asked her about the drama.
“What is going on in the House of Representatives?” Alex Wagner inquired. “This was supposed to be just a pro forma exercise. They’re gonna pass the CR, and it has turned into an utter debacle with people openly calling for Speaker Johnson to be thrown out of the speaker’s office. How are Democrats looking at this?”
“We’re looking at this like this is their problem,” Crockett replied. “We have seen this play out over and over in the entire two years that I’ve been in Congress.”
The congresswoman pointed to the chaos of the January 2023 speakership vote, which took 15 ballots before Kevin McCarthy was finally elected. He lasted until October when he was ousted. It took Republicans several failed nominations over three weeks before finally landing on Johnson.
“Remember, this is not like one of the most senior members,” Crockett continued. “So basically, he had not burned enough bridges. And so, they had to go way, way down in seniority to find someone that they could come to a consensus on… We have seen this over and over. And I’m just gonna sit back and sip my tea and wait on them to figure it out.”
“Or maybe something stronger,” Wagner replied.
