Huh? GOP Congressman Tells Fox He’s Introducing Resolution to Award Trump the Nobel Peace Prize
A GOP lawmaker told Fox Business on Friday that he’s working on a resolution to award Donald Trump a Nobel Peace Prize, since the Nobel committee failed to do so Friday morning.
The Nobel committee announced Friday that the coveted 2025 prize had been awarded to María Corina Machado Parisca, a Venezuelan politician and prominent opposition leader to the authoritarian Nicolás Maduro regime.
Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) told Fox Business Host Ashley Webster, in for Stuart Varney, that Trump is the “president of peace, and no one could have gotten us to this point that he’s gotten us to.”
Carter continued:
Joe Biden and his administration didn’t even try to achieve peace in the Middle East. Donald Trump has done that and I applaud him for that. That’s why he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize and that’s why I’m introducing a resolution for Congress today that will honor him with the Nobel Peace Prize, and if need be, we’ll call for a discharge petition on that. I hope we can work with the speaker though and get it on the floor for a vote.
Webster did not challenge Carter’s assertion that a Nobel Peace Prize could be awarded by anyone other than the Nobel committee.
Trump had been lobbying for the prize, often citing his 20-point Gaza peace plan, and his claim that he’s “stopped seven wars” as justification for the award.
Trump’s first term predecessor, former President Barack Obama, won the Peace Prize in 2009.
The Nobel committee is made up by a five-member panel that goes through a secret selection process whereby “qualified individuals and organizations worldwide” are considered. The committee then creates a shortlist and conducts interviews. A final vote is taken in October, with the laureate announced shortly after that.
According to Alfred Nobel’s will, the prize rewards the person or organization that has done the “most or best to advance fellowship among nations, the abolition or reduction of standing armies, and the establishment and promotion of peace congresses.”
No other U.S. lawmaker has yet commented on Carter’s ill-conceived plan to designate Trump the winner.
