‘I Guess They Consciously Uncoupled’: CNN Panel Snarks About ‘Awkward’ Way Kimberly Guilfoyle Is Being Shipped Off to Greece
The panel on Wednesday’s episode of Inside Politics with Dana Bash got some laughs at the expense of President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle — a nomination made in the wake of her recently broken engagement with Trump’s son, Donald Trump Jr.
Trump announced the pick Tuesday evening, writing on his Truth Social account that the former Fox News on-air personality had been “a close friend and ally” for “many years,” citing her “extensive experience and leadership in law, media, and politics along with her sharp intellect.”
“Kimberly is perfectly suited to foster strong bilateral relations with Greece, advancing our interests on issues ranging from defense cooperation to trade and economic innovation,” wrote Trump. “Congratulations Kimberly!”
Guilfoyle thanked Trump for the nomination in a tweet Tuesday evening.
Donald Trump Jr. offered his congratulations in his own tweet, writing that he was “so proud of Kimberly.”
“She loves America and she always has wanted to serve the country as an Ambassador,” he added.
The eldest Trump son’s tweet was swarmed with replies — mostly mocking — commenting on his rumored new relationship and the end of his years-long engagement with Guilfoyle.
Anchor Dana Bash’s panel similarly focused on the timing of the president-elect’s announcement, within hours of a Daily Mail article dishing on Trump Jr’s new “romance” with a Palm Beach socialite.
Bash kicked off the segment by describing Guilfoyle as “an attorney, former Fox News host, former, uh, fiancée to his son,” before cuing up several video clips of Guilfoyle on the campaign trail for the elder Trump. The video montage ended with Guilfoyle’s viral “The Best! Is Yet! To Come!” moment from the 2020 Republican National Convention.
“That’s definitely like my top five moments of the 2020 election — that last one there,” Bash said, noting that another one of the clips was about Guilfoyle’s “personal life — and now I guess they consciously uncoupled!”
“I’m sure Gwyneth [Paltrow] and Chris Martin are not going to like that, that analogy,” Bash quipped, referring to the infamous phrase the couple used when they announced their divorce in 2014, “but, look, she is being nominated to go to the other side of the world to be an ambassador.”
“What can you say about Kimberly Guilfoyle?” said Bloomberg columnist Nia-Malika Henderson. “You know, I mean, the president has obviously doled out ambassadorships to folks who are, uh — it’s not in the family way, right? She is not in the family way, but, you know, friends of his –”
“Family adjacent,” said Bash.
“Family adjacent,” repeated Henderson. “This is someone who is that, you know, I guess the coupling has uncoupled, and we’ll see….Lara Trump might actually be a senator at some point. So it is good to be family adjacent. It is good to be a donor to Donald Trump, Donald Trump’s campaign. And we have seen that he has filled a lot of these roles with billionaires and people who are loyal to him and close to his family.”
“One thing I’d say is it’s not a rarity for a president to — or, a president-elect to nominate big donors, big financiers,” said chief domestic correspondent Phil Mattingly, pointing out that Guilfoyle had run the Trump campaign finance operation in 2020 and was very involved in the fundraising in 2024, “obviously very clearly an important surrogate.”
“My biggest question is, honestly, what are the people of — what are the government officials in Greece thinking right now?” Mattingly continued. “You’re thinking like, oh, Kimberly Guilfoyle, she’s engaged to the president-elect’s son –”
“But she’s not!” interjected Henderson. “It’s awkward!”
“Oh, no, maybe she’s not,” said Mattingly. “There’s a lot of stuff going on there that I don’t really know anything about.”
