Karl Rove Warns Trump That He’s Making the Same ‘Big Mistake’ Joe Biden Did
Fox News contributor and revered GOP operative Karl Rove warned President Donald Trump that he’s “making the same mistake” Joe Biden did and is likely to pay a political price for it over the weekend.
After summarizing the results of a new Fox News poll that yielded mixed reviews of Trump’s performance in office, Journal Editorial Report host Paul Gigot asked Rove where Trump stands with the public six months into his second term.
“Well, you put the numbers up there. It’s-, they’re better than they were in his first term, but they’re not where most presidents are at this point following an election victory. The country is deeply polarized. He has very strong adherents, very strong detractors,” began Rove in response. “What’s interesting to me is if you take a look inside some of these polls, like, for example, the Wall Street Journal poll, we now have more Republicans than Democrats. This is a very odd circumstance. Republicans are used to fighting elections even when they have the White House, with more people identifying as Democrats than the Republicans. But give Trump his due, he has changed the nature of American politics and given the Republicans a lead. And, however, on the generic ballot, it’s 46 Dem, 43 R for the midterm elections. That’s because while he has strengthened the support among right-leaning Republicans, he has also sort of lost ground among independents, who at this point are disposed to say, ‘I’m voting Democrat in the midterm election.'”
“If I were sitting in the White House and looking at the president’s standing, the numbers that would really jump out at me are the ones on the economy and inflation, because I think he was elected in substantial part because Biden let inflation go, and real incomes of working Americans just hadn’t gone up over four years. And right now, they’re not giving him credit for that,” observed Gigot before asking: “Now, it may be too early for that, but are those-, is that a warning sign for the White House?”
“Oh, it ought to be because you’re absolutely right that the election was decided on economy, inflation, and the border. Ironically enough, the more secure the border, the less important an issue that is and the more important the economy and inflation become,” answered Rove. “And to me, what’s ironic is, is that the Trump administration is making the same mistake that the Biden administration made, which was to basically, remember we had Bidenomics is working, well, now we have the golden age of American prosperity is returned, and Americans are not feeling that. Better to say we’re working hard to put America on the right road, rather than declaring premature victory. And I think that’s a big mistake for the White House and is likely to come back and bite them in the midterm election.”
