Lanny Davis Rebukes Trump’s Claim of Not Directing Cohen Hush Money Payments: ‘He’s Not Stating Facts’

Lanny Davis, who served as Michael Cohen‘s lawyer until very recently, is challenging President Donald Trump‘s claim of not being involved with Cohen’s campaign finance lawbreaking.

Trump broke his silence on the sentencing of his former attorney Thursday, saying he never directed Cohen to break the law, and that it’s Cohen’s own fault if he broke the law by mistake. This comes after audio recordings and federal court filings point to Trump ordering Cohen’s illegal 2016 hush money payments to cover up the president’s alleged affairs.

Davis spoke out Thursday morning about the Cohen legal firestorm to MSNBC’s Hallie Jackson, and said Trump is tweeting a factually-inaccurate statement a lawyer must’ve written up for him.

“He’s stating a legal conclusion that some lawyer must have written for him, but he’s not stating facts…Fact One, it’s undeniable, you already played the tape, that he was aware of this payment. Fact Two is that you have corroboration as of yesterday that we knew about that the publication owner collaborated in order to hush up bad news before the election and it was about the election. So those are facts.”

As Davis continued to remark on the evidence against Trump’s claim, Jackson asked him if Cohen has any more secret Trump recordings. This led to Davis defending the “compelling” content of his tapes, even as Jackson pressed him on whether Cohen has any more evidence to provide with regards to Trump.
