Mehdi Hasan Warns We’re ‘In the Midst of a Rolling Coup’: GOP ‘Will Not Certify a Democratic Victory in 2024’ If They Control House and Trump is Nominee
MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan warned his viewers that America was “in the midst of a rolling coup,” predicting that if former President Donald Trump was the 2024 presidential nominee and the GOP controlled the House of Representatives, then “they will not certify a Democratic victory in 2024.”
“Nine months after the storming of the United States Capitol, the attempt to overturn the results of 2020 election is still under way,” said Hasan to open his eponymous show on Sunday.
“We are in the midst of a rolling coup,” he continued. “Almost every day Republicans pass more voter suppression laws. They purge more and more election officials and they entrench the big lie that the election was stolen. Just check out this weekend.”
Hasan played several recent video clips, including of Trump from his rally in Iowa on Saturday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures, and Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) on Fox News Sunday.
Hasan declared Scalise’s comments “the most chilling” to him, for not just refusing to say that the 2020 election wasn’t stolen, but for complaining about states not following “legislatively-set rules.”
Scalise was”carefully foreshadowing what the GOP position is likely to be come 2024,” Hasan explained, a combination of claiming election fraud and allowing Republican state legislatures to have the power to pick the slate of presidential electors, “never mind voters and their pesky, you know, ‘vote’ in a democracy.”
“The Republicans want to unilaterally decide who runs the country,” he said. “It’s all about election subversion now. Mark my words: If Donald Trump is the 2024 Republican presidential nominee and Republicans control the House of Representatives, they will not certify a democratic victory in 2024.”
“This is not normal,” Hasan concluded. “None of this is normal. As a newcomer to this country, let me remind you, that if we were seeing what’s happening here in another country, we’d be very, very alarmed.”
Hasan was born in England and became a naturalized American citizen in October 2020, just in time to vote in the election the next month.
