MSNBC Panel Gets Heated as RNC Spox Defends Ivanka on Emails: ‘You Know This Is Bad Optics!’
RNC spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany appeared on MSNBC today and defended Ivanka Trump on the scrutiny into her emails, saying this is nothing like the situation with Hillary Clinton.
Anchor Alex Witt noted how President Donald Trump kept bringing up Clinton’s emails on the campaign trail and asked how this isn’t at least hypocritical.
McEnany said this is “entirely different” and took place during a transition period.
Democratic strategist Don Calloway said the reason to use personal email is to “avoid the sunshine and necessary disclosures that you have to make with the government emails.” Former House GOP committee counsel Sophia Nelson said there’s a lot we don’t know and there should be an investigation into whether there was any serious violation.
McEnany insisted this was not a “deliberate cover-up.” When Witt asked if it was just a “lapse of judgment,” she responded, “I think when she’s juggling ten things at once and making childcare plans that happen to touch on official business, she wasn’t thinking about the Public Records Act.”
Nelson shot back, “Hillary Clinton was making wedding plans for her daughter’s wedding on her emails. Does she get a pass? No!”
She and McEnany sparred a bit and Nelson said, “You know, Kayleigh––you’re a smart woman––that this is bad optics for the White House!”
