MSNBC’s ‘Independent’ Analyst Gibbs Blasts GOP’s ‘Incoherent,’ ‘Incongruent’ Sequester Messaging
Former White House Press Secretary-turned-MSNBC analyst Robert Gibbs recently told CNN’s Howard Kurtz that he plans to act as an “independent” political analyst in his new role as an MSNBC contributor. Today, Gibbs joined Andrea Mitchell where he determined that Congressional Republicans have a weaker hand in sequester negotiations with President Barack Obama. Furthermore, he said that their messaging around the sequester cuts was both “incongruent” and “incoherent.”
Mitchell asked Gibbs for his thoughts on a recent NBC News / Wall Street Journal poll which showed both Congressional Republicans and President Obama losing public support, but Republicans in Congress faring especially poorly with voters.
Gibbs said that anyone involved in the sequester debate is going to “come out with some amount of mud” on them. However, he said that the GOP is in a weaker position than the president.
“The problem, again, from the Republican standpoint with their message – and you mentioned this poll – is, you’ve got Republicans that say, ‘these [cuts] will hurt the economy, they will hurt our military readiness, and they should go through,’” Gibbs said.
“I think, just from a message structure, that’s a very incoherent, incongruent message to try to sell,” Gibbs continued.
