O’Reilly, Kurtz Rip Sharpton Apart for Deceptive Editing, Swipe at MSNBC’s Fox Obsession
Bill O’Reilly is still peeved about Al Sharpton taking his commentary about Nelson Mandela out of context, and brought on media critics Howard Kurtz and Bernie Goldberg to scold Sharpton and analyze the MSNBC culture that allows people to get away with this kind of thing.
Goldberg said MSNBC’s “afraid” of Sharpton and don’t want to risk any fallout from firing him. Kurtz said they should fire the producer who engaged in “malicious attempts to deceive viewers,” also pointing to the conflict of interest in Sharpton being a political activist and major face of a news network.
And even if NBC’s defense of association with MSNBC is that it’s like an editorial page in an otherwise straight newspaper, Goldberg asked, “Is that the kind of editorial page you want?” He charged that the editing was likely done by “young liberal unethical producers” who don’t operate within the bounds of “traditional journalism,” and they do “what the culture of MSNBC expects of them.”
The three of them quickly turned to all the sniping MSNBC does at Fox News all the time. Kurtz said, “If Fox News went off the air, MSNBC would have to be a test pattern several hours a day!”
