Police Say There Is No Confirmed Connection Between New Orleans and Vegas Attacks Despite Incredible Coincidences

Police in Las Vegas laid out a number of incredible coincidences about the man who exploded a truck in front of the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas and the man who rammed a crowd in New Orleans hours apart from each other at a Thursday press conference.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill told reporters Thursday afternoon that Shamsud-Din Jabbar and Matthew Livelsberger shared similar backgrounds and engaged in similar activities prior to their alleged actions on New Year’s Day.

Jabbar, 42, rammed a truck into a crowd in New Orleans early on Wednesday morning, killing 14, investigators have said. He was killed during a shootout with local police. Livelsberger, 37, is alleged to have detonated explosives in a Tesla Cybertruck several hours later just off the Vegas Strip in front of Trump’s hotel. killing himself and injuring seven people.

McMahill said he would not identify the man in the Cybertruck definitively as Livelsberger but that the tattoos on a body in the vehicle matched those that the special forces veteran had. The truck also contained an ID belonging to Livelsberger.

The sheriff then noted that Livelsberger and Jabbar both rented their trucks from the same app, served at the same Army base, and fought in Afghanistan at the same time. McMahill could not confirm if the two suspects knew one another but said:

Now, I would like to acknowledge a couple of things because I know what’s going on in the social media world, and there are a number of things in this case that are similar to the attack in New Orleans. We do know that our subjects here served in the military. In fact, [Livelsberger was] a current member of the military. Both of the subjects served at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. What we do know about that is it’s a very large military base, and we have no record that they served in the same unit or even at the same years at Fort Bragg, something that continues to remain under investigation.

I also know that they both served in Afghanistan in 2009. We don’t have any evidence that they were in the same province in Afghanistan, the same location or the same unit. Again, something else that remains under investigation. And we also know, of course, that they both used the rental company, Turo, to rent their vehicles. As far as his military background, it’s been confirmed by [the Pentagon] that he was indeed in the United States Army. He was also a Green Beret operations sergeant who spent most of his time at Fort Carson, Colorado, and in Germany.
