Red Eye Crew Defend Fired NBC Employee For Releasing “What Is The Internet?” Video

An online nation may have laughed last week at the mid-1990s naivete of Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric as they tried to figure out what this whole “internet” thing is about, but NBC wasn’t laughing: they fired the employee that released the video. But not everyone is so opposed to leaking retro vids: the Red Eye crew came to his defense, and even “released” a video gem of their own.

The employee, explained host Greg Gutfeld, “violated company standards of conduct,” which made most of the panel cry outrage– particularly Paul Mercurio— who was outraged at the apparent incompetence of the Today Show crew (“they were supposed to be ahead of the curb!”), and Jedediah Bila, who, while sad for the employee, was also happy to make Al Gore references.

Practicing what they preach, they crew later received their regular roasting from ombudsman Andy Levy who last night caught such errors as the mis pronunciation of “NBC.” But before that, and out of fairness and solidarity with the departed NBC employee that brought the media world so much anachronistic cheer last week, Gutfeld released an exclusive clip of himself talking about the internet in the ’90s (you can tell it’s the ’90s because he’s wearing a beanie).
