‘She Knows Better’: Former FBI General Counsel Slams Stefanik’s ‘Irresponsible’ Ethics Complaint Against Trump Judge
Andrew Weissmann blasted Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) on Friday, hours after she filed an ethics complaint against Judge Arthur Engoron.
Engoron is presiding over former President Donald Trump’s New York civil trial and has already issued a summary judgment finding that Trump and his Trump Organization defrauded lenders and insurance companies. Attorney General Letitia James is seeking $250 million in damages from Trump and the loss of his ability to do business in the state.
Trump has repeatedly attacked people involved in the case, including Engoron.
On Friday, Stefanik, who is the chair of the House Republican conference, followed Trump’s lead by posting a lengthy letter on Twitter/X that she said she sent to the New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct.
The letter began:
I write today to express my serious concerns about the inappropriate bias and judicial intemperance shown by Judge Arthur F. Engoron in New York’s lawsuit against President Donald J. Trump and the Trump Organization. This judge’s bizarre behavior has no place in our judicial system, where Judge Engoron is not honoring the defendant’s rights to due process and a fair trial. These serious concerns are exacerbated by the fact that the defendant is the leading candidate for President of the United States, and it appears the judicial system is being politicized to affect the outcome of the campaign.
Weissmann, a former federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of New York and ex-FBI general counsel, had pointed words for Stefanik on MSNBC’s Deadline: White House.
“[Trump] has a number of enablers,” he began. “For instance, Elise Stefanik filed a complaint against the judge. That is so irresponsible. She knows better. And that is really– this idea that it’s constantly a step too far and it’s now normalized where you have somebody in Congress doing that and the judge is just doing his job. You may disagree with him. You can say that. You can say he’s missed evidence. But really? A complaint against him for doing his job? Beyond the pale.”
