Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Trevor Noah Tackle the DNC: ‘Nothing Quite Fires Up Americans Like Long Speeches Over Zoom’
Late-night hosts Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, and Trevor Noah aired live on Monday night following the DNC — sharing their reactions to former First Lady Michelle Obama’s speech, along with other quips about the virtual event.
Colbert filmed his show live for the first time since the pandemic, joking that the convention brought him hope because it brought him back to where he was four years ago: “in a room with other people.”
Before addressing those who were invited to speak on Monday night, the host poked fun at some of those who weren’t.
“They had a montage of the other Democratic presidential nominees voicing their strong support of Joe Biden,” he said. “I assume Marianne Williamson wasn’t included because she was busy teaching a forest gnome how to use a crystal to talk to a wish.”
Colbert specifically addressed former Ohio Governor John Kasich and Obama’s DNC speeches while mocking the Republican party.
“He was there to underline the theme of this convention: ‘Uniting America,’ the host said of Kasich. “Slightly more inspiring than the Republican convention theme, ‘Gas protesters and throw mailboxes into the sea.’”
“Wow, four years of Trump has really lowered the bar for president,” Colbert said of Obama’s speech. “‘I support Joe Biden. He believes the Earth orbits the sun and he won’t stab you.'”
On a more earnest note, Colbert admitted to being so impressed by Obama’s speech, he was unable to poke fun of her or make jokes at her expense.
“I’ll be honest with you. My job is to have a joke for every time somebody says anything in public,” he said. “After watching Michelle Obama’s speech, I have never been more happy to fail at my job.”
Fallon also discussed the DNC on Monday night, quipping that “nothing quite fires up Americans like long speeches over Zoom.”
The host joked that tomorrow’s schedule will include a break at 10:01 pm to help Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reconnect to his WiFi, followed by breaks every minute to continue to help a lost Schumer figure out the internet.
“For the first night of the Democratic convention, there was wall to wall coverage on CNN and MSNBC,” Fallon said. “Meanwhile, on Fox News, there was a three-hour special called Kamala Harris: Where Do You Think She Was Born?”
“If you missed Michelle Obama’s speech, don’t worry, Melania will deliver the same speech at next week’s Republican convention,” the host later joked, harking back to the first lady’s speech at the 2016 RNC.
Noah also joked about the convention going virtual this year amid the coronavirus pandemic, adding, “which means no crowds, no dancing, no balloon drops, and definitely no Bill Clinton kissing booth.”
The host later quipped that Biden is “basically the Cheerios of the presidential candidates — he’s not the most exciting option, but deep down, you know he’s good for you.”
