Steve Martin Opens SNL 50th Anniversary By Calling In ICE To Deport ‘Canadian Martin Short’

Comedian Steve Martin kicked off Saturday Night Live’s’ 50th Anniversary Special with a monologue introducing himself as the show’s “newest diversity hire” and calling on Immigration And Customs Enforcement (ICE) to deport his longtime friend and comedy partner Martin Short back to Canada.

The legendary comic took the stage for NBC’s three-hour primetime celebration for an opening was laced with tongue-in-cheek jibes at recent politics and the Trump administration as well as roasting famous comedians in attendance, including Bill Murray and David Letterman.

Good evening. And welcome to the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live. I’m Steve Martin, Saturday Night Live’s newest diversity hire. And what a thrill it is to be here.

As the audience laughed, Martin continued with a jab at the newly named Gulf of America:

Now, I can’t believe — I can’t believe I even made it here in time. It was only a few days ago that Lorne told me I was doing the monologue, and I was actually vacationing on a friend’s boat down in the Gulf of Steve Martin.

In a moment that stole the segment, however, Short, dubbed the “Canadian Steve Martin,” joined him on stage—only to be swiftly “arrested” by fake ICE agents at Martin’s command.

“Do you have your passport on you? ICE, get him!” he deadpanned, as Short was dragged away in mock horror.
