Stewart Hilariously Ridicules The Obama/Romney Campaigns’ Lowered Debate Expectations
In the opening segment of The Daily Show last night, host Jon Stewart took both the Obama and Romney campaigns to task for lowering the expectations for their respective candidates’ performances in this week’s presidential debate.
Stewart explained the massive media hype leading up to this week’s debate, and mocked the fact that neither campaign’s surrogates seem willing to actually praise their nominee’s debate skills, playing a game of “negate expectations.” He played clips from former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D) and GOP VP candidate Paul Ryan both downplaying their respective nominee’s chances at success in the first debate.
Stewart then played a clip of NJ Gov. Chris Christie praising Romney as a great debater, declaring that he will experience a jump in the polls following the debate.
“Oh [expletive], we got a runner!” Stewart jokingly shouted. “What are you doing, Christie? Apparently only New Jersey Governor Chris Christie did not get the memo that his party’s nominee ‘sucks’ at this.” But then Stewart realized why Christie might want to set the expectations so high for Romney to fail: the 2016 election. “The Jersey is strong in this one,” Stewart said in a dark voice.
Stewart then tore into the media narrative that both candidates have to use these debates to show that they aren’t either arrogant or a “weirdo.”
