Sunny Hostin Defends ‘Subversive’ SNL Sketch By Claiming ‘Regular Jeopardy’ Is ‘Basically the White Jeopardy’
The View host Sunny Hostin offered a unique take on a recent Saturday Night Live sketch that offended supporters of President Donald Trump.
The sketch — aired during a special episode of SNL celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary — featured actor Tom Hanks playing a MAGA-hat-wearing Trump supporter named Doug. In the sketch, Doug is a contestant on the show Black Jeopardy!, with the host played by Keenan Thompson. Doug first appeared in another Black Jeopardy! sketch in 2016.
At one point in Saturday’s sketch, Thompson’s character approached Doug to shake his hand. In response, Doug threw his hands up and recoiled in fear. The moment was met with outrage among conservatives due to the apparent implication that Trump supporters are afraid of Black people.
On Tuesday’s episode of The View, Hostin explained how she interpreted the “subversive” sketch. In her mind, the handshake bit may have been a reference to the husband of Republican Sen. Deb Fischer who was accused of refusing to shake the hand of then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I think it’s a very subversive sketch,” Hostin said. “In fact, it’s about Black culture being American culture. And so, when you have the regular Jeopardy, you know, it’s basically the White Jeopardy that already exists — because I’ve been on it and lost… In 2018, you had Chadwick Boseman on”.
“And the fact that he refused to shake the host’s hand, that has happened before. Do you remember when the senator’s husband that was being [sworn in] refused… He refused to shake [Harris’s] hand; so I felt that it was very subversive. I felt that it was a sort of a callback to that,” she continued.
