Trump’s National Security Advisor Says Putin Can Have Eastern Ukraine
National Security Advisor Mike Waltz made a shocking public disclosure on Thursday, telling Fox News that a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine would almost certainly involve the cession of the Donbas region to Russia.
President Donald Trump has insisted he will bring an end to the war that began in February 2022 when Russia invaded its neighbor to the west. Russian President Vladimir Putin has consistently said the aim of the invasion is the removal of President Volodymyr Zelensky and his government, as well as Ukraine’s demilitarization.
On Thursday, Putin – at least for the time being – appeared to throw cold water on a 30-day ceasefire proposed by the Trump administration.
Later in the day on Fox News, Sean Hannity asked Waltz what a potential deal might entail. The host envisioned that the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine, which is occupied by Russia, would be given to Putin as part of a peace deal:
HANNITY: If I were to imagine how this deal unfolds, it’s gonna be the rare earth mineral deal, a component that keeps U.S. involvement and presence in Ukraine. Maybe European troops could be in Ukraine as well. I would imagine that Ukraine being a part of NATO is not gonna happen, and I would imagine that parts – maybe the Donbas region in particular or areas that are heavily populated by people from Russia – that would go to Putin in any negotiated settlement. Am I wrong in my conjecture here?”
WALTZ: Sean, no surprise, you’re not wrong in any of that. And what’s important is that we are discussing all of those things with both sides. We are having those discussions with our counterparts, with the Russians. We are having those discussions with our counterparts with the Ukrainians, and we are pushing both sides together with President Trump, the dealmaker-in-chief who is determined to end this war.
Hannity followed up by hailing Trump and slamming Democrats.
“What happened to the party that once was singing, ‘All we’re saying because give peace a chance’? They seem to have disappeared,” the host concluded.
