WATCH: Joy Behar and Meghan McCain Snipe in Icy Debate on Trump’s Special Olympics Fiasco
The View got a bit tense on Friday when Meghan McCain and Joy Behar went head-to-head over the best way to make an argument against President Donald Trump and his administration.
The conversation began with the panel analyzing how Trump undermined Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Thursday by claiming he’s working to reverse her budget cuts for the Special Olympics. Ana Navarro wondered how DeVos could work for Trump after she has “thrown her under the bus.” And Behar got in the mix by taking cracks at DeVos for her wealth.
McCain argued that DeVos’ wealth shouldn’t be held against her in this situation — which spiraled into a discussion about whether the Trump administration has compassion for children and special needs individuals. McCain acknowledged that DeVos’ budget cut proposal would come out to around four Mar-a-Lago trips for Trump, but urged her colleagues to “extract emotion from some of these conversations and stick with facts instead of doing character assassinations on people.”
“I have a lot of personal feelings about the president,” McCain said, “but for me to get through this administration, I can’t traffic in this kind of way. I have to stick with facts or I’m going to lose my mind.”
“Why would you stick with facts when they’re all about alternative facts?” Behar asked.
“Because I am better than they are,” McCain answered. “Because I hold myself to a different standard than they do. And the second I go low with this administration is the second I lose my credibility and my character and I will not do it.”
The conversation continued to revolve around emotion-based arguments, with Behar saying the country is run by people who have “no sympathy or empathy for the poor and disabled.” McCain responded by suggesting that Behar should stick with the Mar-a-Lago argument against Trump, calling it the “killshot” in the debate on the Special Olympics matter.
“Your argument yesterday saying it was merely four trips to Mar-a-Lago for the president, I think for a lot of people was the fact that changed our minds, because that’s a lot of garbage. That four trips to Mar-a-Lago were the equivalent of funding the Special Olympics. If you wanna talk about personalities or whatever, that’s the fact that I think was the killshot for this. It’s ridiculous. Four trips to Mar-a-Lago versus Special Olympics funding?”
When Behar countered that Trump won by running an emotion-based campaign, McCain retorted with “I don’t have that luxury and I have to try to stick in facts.”
“We’ll do both,” Behar offered as she wrapped up the segment.
