WH Spox Confronted by Fox & Friends Hosts About Aide’s ‘Horrific’ McCain Joke
Despite reports of an apology call to Meghan McCain for a joke made by a Trump administration staffer about her father’s brain cancer, White House Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley still isn’t convinced the comments were even made.
Confronted Sunday on Fox & Friends, Gidley was asked whether White House aide Kelly Sadnler‘s jab at Sen. John McCain‘s (R-AZ) illness was kind, given that kindness is the cornerstone of First Lady Melania Trump‘s new anti-bullying campaign, “Be Best.”
“Look, I wasn’t in the meeting, I didn’t hear the comment,” Gidley said
“But you’ve heard the comment now,” host Ed Henry shot back.
But Gidley continued his refusal to comment directly on the matter, saying he doesn’t “know if the comment was even made or not,” and again reminding Henry he wasn’t in the meeting.
Once the apology call from Sadler to the senator’s daughter was mentioned, Gidley acknowledged that he was aware of that, but that he wouldn’t comment on anything said in a closed-door meeting.
“Look, those comments, whether they were made or not made, there was some reports in there obviously, too, about the internal workings of that meeting that just shouldn’t be made public,” he said.
Then Gidley shifted topics and pointing to what he referred to as President Donald Trump‘s betterment of the country.
“Listen, we work in the White House every day trying to make this country better and push forward the agenda to this president that was elected to push forth in protecting the American people rebuilding the economy,” he said.
However, Gidley’s attempt to focus attention on Iran and the returned ex-detainees from North Korea, host Abby Huntsman turned the conversation back to the joke, asking why the White House couldn’t simply issue an apology for this “horrific” joke.
And once again, Gidley said he wasn’t aware of whether the joke was madeg.
“All I can say is we don’t comment on internal private meetings in the White House, but look if she called Megan McCain, if that’s confirmed to some degree, that’s up to Kelly Sadler herself and the McCain family,” he said.
